Should I install solar panels?

How does it work?

A domestic solar PV system consists of a number of solar panels mounted to your roof (or in your garden) which are connected to the electrical loads within your building.
The solar panels generate DC (direct current – like a battery) electricity, which is then converted from an inverter to AC (alternating current – like the electricity in your domestic socket).
Solar PV systems are rated in kilowatts (kW). A 1kW solar PV system would require 3 or 4 solar panels on your roof.
Any excess electricity produced can be stored in a battery, or other storage solution like your hot water immersion tank. It can also be exported from your house into the electrical network on your street.

Cost to install solar panels:

Solar panel installation costs vary depending on the quality and number of panels and extra features (such as a battery) you'd like to get installed.
Typical solar panel and installation costs range from €5,000 to €18,000.
Approximately €1,700 – €2,500 per kWp.
Although up-front costs are heavy, solar panels are a long-term investment to save you money on your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint.

Available Solar Grants

You can claim €900 per kWp up to 2 kWp with SEAI. Every kWp thereafter is eligible for €300 up to 4kWp. The total grant is capped at €2,400. Learn how to apply here

SEAI is also offering €600 to help cover the cost of a battery energy storage system if you choose to purchase one. This grant is available for PV systems over 2kWp. Learn more here.

Who can apply?

All homeowners, including private landlords, whose homes were built and occupied before 2021 can apply. This is defined as the date your electricity meter was installed. This is different to other grant measures where the home must be built before 2011.
